Weekly News Article
Week of June 27th
The Minnesota State Primary Election will be held on August 9, 2022.  That really isn’t that far off.  Whether you have mail in balloting or in person voting you will be seeing information in the papers about this election.  “What is a primary election”, you ask?  According to the Minnesota Secretary of State, “A primary election determines which candidates will be on the ballot in the November general election.  For example, five candidates from one political party might run for governor. Only one candidate can be on the ballot in November. The winner of the August primary election will represent their party on the November election ballot.  There may be two kinds of offices on your primary ballot: partisan offices and nonpartisan offices.  Partisan offices will list a political party next to a candidate’s name on the ballot. All state and federal offices—such as U.S. representative or Minnesota senator—are partisan offices.  Partisan candidates will be listed in multiple columns on the primary ballot. Each column will list the candidates for one major party.  You can only vote for candidates from one political party. If you vote for candidates from more than one political party, your votes will not count. You decide when you vote which one of the parties you will vote for—Minnesota does not have political party registration.  Nonpartisan offices will not list a political party next to a candidate’s name on the ballot. For example, county, city, township and school board offices are nonpartisan.  Nonpartisan offices will be listed on the back side of the primary ballot. You can vote for any candidate. The candidates who get the most votes will be on the November general election ballot.”  In being an election judge since 2008, I have noticed that there are a lot of people out there that don’t understand that in a primary election you only vote for one candidate in one political party.  Otherwise, your ballot won’t count.  There will be columns with Republican candidates, Democratic candidates, and other party candidates.  Remember to pick only one political party to vote on.  However, don’t forget to turn the ballot over and vote for your city councilors, county board members and sheriff, and school board members.  There will be an example of a ballot in the newspaper for all to see before the election. Make your vote count.

The Park by the Dam (Rock Arch Rapids) is still closed to the public.  Please stay out of the area.  The state is doing some logging in that area also.  It will be opened after the construction crews are done and the DNR gives the city permission to open up the park.

Please do not flush wet wipes down the toilet or put down the sink if you live in the city of Willow River.  We have to replace a sewer lift pump because of those wipes.  Even if it says that wipes are flushable that does not mean they disintegrate.  That just means they’ll go down the toilet.  The new pump will cost the taxpayers of the city about $9,000.  I would say that in the future if you do not want your sewer rates to go up, stop flushing wipes.  They do not break down very well.  I really would hate to see the rates go up.  Please tell your neighbors in case they do not get the newspaper.

At St. Mary’s/ St. Isidore’s Catholic Churches:   If you are interested in going to confession during the week, you may let Fr. Francis know and he will be happy to hear your confession after daily Mass or by appointment.  The Legion of Mary will meet at the St. Mary’s Center Wednesday’s at  5 pm.
